Ballroom Luminoso is a series of six chandeliers designed by artists Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock currently installed in San Antonio, Texas. Made from custom made structural steel, custom LEDs and recycled bicycle parts, the lights project colorful silhouettes of sprockets and other pieces onto the otherwise drab cement underpass.

If you walk west on Alabama Street from Five Points Station, planning to use this walkway to get to CNN or Phillips Arena… and you walk up these stairs… you’ll find yourself looking at this fence… which was put up about two years ago, after the top of a truck hit the underside of the walkway… resulting in these two chunks of concrete being knocked loose and the walkway being declared unsafe to use. To get over to CNN/Phillips, you have to take Forsyth Street to MLK, turn right and take MLK to Spring Street, turn right on Spring Street and keep going until you get to the row of blue awnings that leads across the top level of the CNN parking deck. Of course, in the time it takes to do all that you could’ve caught a westbound train and ridden the one stop to the cumbersomely named Dome/GWCC/Philips/CNN Station. At least every 48 hours for the past two years, I’ve watched annoyed, bewildered people descending those stairs, with no idea how they’re supposed get to the other side of Spring Street. Whoever owns that property apparently can neither be bothered to get the walkway repaired nor to put a sign at the bottom of the stairs indicating that it’s blocked.

The “SkyView Atlanta” wheel, which will be less than half the height of the London Eye, will be re-located from Pensacola, Florida, to a spot near Centennial Olympic Park, which was constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Le freak, c’est chic!

Sprinkle a few food trucks around the Tabernacle’s parking lot (or one of the other five within a block of it) and this could be a great complement to the summer jazz concert series in Centennial Olympic Park.

Spring Street is downright dispiriting at night and anything that gets people walking around there can only help.

MARTA is hosting a second set of public hearings tonight, May 16, on the topic of the agency’s proposed capital and operating budgets for fiscal year 2014.

The meetings will be held at MARTA’s headquarters on Piedmont Road and at the Adamsville Recreation Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

The FY14 budget proposes no fare increase for FY2014 but increases of 15 cents in 2015 and 10 cents in 2016 and 2018. (MARTA’s fiscal years begin on July 1, so, for example, FY14 begins July 1, 2013.)
The budget also aims to maintain current service levels through 2016 and to begin unspecified “service restoration” in 2017
There are also plans to implement a “secret shopper” program to improve customer service as well as an anti-“knucklehead behavior” campaign in 2014
Also in in 2014, employees who have gone without raises for eight years would be eligible for a one-time “incentive payment.” Employees would begin receiving merit pay increases in July 2015
The new budget will also reflect the beginning of the agency’s efforts to rein in the costs of employee healthcare benefits

The meetings begin at 7 p.m., but MARTA staff will be on hand for a “community exchange” between 6 and 7 p.m. with copies of the budgets and display boards of the PowerPoint presentation.

During that short, sudden storm this afternoon, the Red Line train I was on suddenly stopped on the tracks above I-85 just north of Arts Center. After a few seconds the train operator said over the intercom “We’ll be moving momentarily. Stand by.” As if we could do something else.

It wold probably never happen, but I would love to see more transit development in SW Atlanta. A streetcar, more bus routes, a light rail — something. There’s more south of I-20 besides the airport, y’know.

SW Atlanta does seem to frequently get the short end of the stick when it comes to both new transit projects and keeping existing transit service in place even though that’s where the highest concentration of transit-dependent residents are.
